What is Reiki?
Reiki is a 'natural healing' technique (or complementary therapy) taught and used in the UK since the late 1900s, although similar energy therapies go back thousands of years effectively supporting healthcare long before medicine was developed. Reiki promotes relaxation and activates the natural healing/ repair processes of the body to encourage and restore physical, mental and emotional well-being. Used regulary for self care and development Reiki nurtures the soul to enrich life and bring greater happiness and fulfilment too.
It is widely accepted that Reiki can be given and received equally effectively hands on, hands-off or via distant healing.

What is Reiki?
Reiki is a natural and holistic complementary therapy that can benefit us physically, mentally and emotionally. Being holistic it works on the whole body and mind together, addressing the root cause.
The most common response to a Reiki treatment is relaxation and consequently any of the following are possible too:

-
Reduction of stress - as we know, stress is a major cause of illness and disease. It can also influence our blood pressure and immunity. We do not need to be ill for Reiki, a little rest and relaxation time can be good for us all.
-
Calm mind - a more relaxed and 'less busy' mind enables clear thinking, decision making and greater creativity. In this mental state, we may be less reactive to stressful situations and able to manage them better
-
Improved mood and feeling of emotional well-being - the world can seem a better place when we release stress, emotions associated with past trauma and negative thoughts, allowing positive ones to take over
-
Possible reduction in pain - Reiki may help to reduce pain and hence benefit related mobility and mental well-being
-
Enhanced recovery from illness, injury and surgery - think about a time you have been ill. It is likely that you slept more than usual. This is the body's natural. response to promote self healing/ repair. By promoting relaxation, Reiki naturally helps the body to act in ways to best support recovery and repair.

No specific results can be guaranteed, but most people who wish to receive Reiki benefit from its relaxation properties and often more.

Reiki could be described as valuable for preventative healthcare and maintenance of general well-being (through relaxation), as well as being a therapy sought when health issues arise.

For those who learn and practice Reiki self-treatments regularly, Reiki is also considered a spiritual practice. In this context 'spiritual' means that it benefits and nurtures your soul, helping you to move forward, in ways that bring greater happiness to your life. Quite often, this may highlight your life's purpose or 'reason for being' - something that you are, or can become good at, that makes you smile and feel rewarded or fulfiled. It may be a hobby, career or an aspect of your personality/ character that isn't yet shining as it wants to.
Other information you need to know
Reiki is safe for adults, children, mothers–to–be, babies and animals. It supports conventional medicine or can be used alone but is not a replacement for conventional medication or treatments. Reiki Practitioners do not diagnose the health problem. For both people and animals with suspected or known health issues, a doctor or, in the case of animals, a veterinary surgeon should first be seen to obtain a diagnosis.
Distant Reiki can be sent to both people and animals and is ideal when:
(i) the client is too far away to travel to their Reiki Practitioner
(ii) when it may be inappropriate or inconvenient to be with a Reiki
Practitioner at the time that Reiki is sought eg late in an evening
(iii) in a number of other situations
As Reiki is a form of energy therapy, a Reiki Practitioner's work can travel any distance and has been shown to be just as effective whether given in person or from many miles away.

What to expect in a Reiki session?
Reiki is given in a quiet environment to people fully clothed, sitting or lying on a treatment couch often with relaxing music.

When a Reiki Practitioner places his/her hands on or near a person (avoiding personal body areas), the therapy practitioner will normally detect areas of higher energy sensitivity, for example through heat and tingling in their hands, indicating that these are areas that could especially benefit from this restorative energy.
When Reiki energy flows, the recipient will often feel warmth from the practitioner’s hands and a sense of calm relaxation typically follows although other feelings such as coolness, pulsing, tingling or other sensations are possible.
