What is Reiki?

Reiki definition : Oxford English dictionary

'Reiki is a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being'.

It is however, also widely accepted that reiki can be given and received equally effectively hands-off or via distant healing.

Animal Reiki is also available and can be booked through us or Friends Of Baxter

And we work in partnership with Paddlin Paws to offer Hydrotherapy

Why might you want a reiki session?

Reiki helps to restore the body’s natural balance, supporting the mind, body and spirit, and it may help with physical aspects as well as mental and emotional issues. In animals, addressing emotional issues can lead to an improvement in certain behavioural aspects too.

This therapy generally creates a state of relaxation in both people and animals and as a consequence it may aid stress reduction. In addition to offering physical and emotional comfort, it can produce a greater feeling of overall well being, and encourage an improved sense of self. Many people seek reiki also to assist with recovery from injury and illness, and when suffering from many other health matters.
Because reiki is holistic it will always work for an individual’s highest good and seeks to focus on addressing the root cause of an issue rather than just the symptoms, however no specific result can ever be guaranteed.

Reiki energy explained further

The Japanese word ‘Reiki’ literally translates as universal life force energy and this system of healing was developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. It is a non-invasive complementary therapy that has been taught and used in the UK since the late 1900s, but Eastern medicine has for thousands of years worked with this energy, recognising its flow through all living things. It is not based on any belief, faith or suggestion and scientific research using quantum physics is starting to help us to understand how reiki may work to benefit the individual. It has been suggested that in years to come it may be known as energy medicine based on scientifically measurable energy emitted from the healer’s hands.

Other information you need to know

Reiki is safe for adults, children, mothers–to–be, babies and animals. It supports orthodox medicine or can be used alone but is not a replacement for traditional medication or treatments. However in the case of animals with health issues, owners should confirm that the animal has been seen by a veterinary surgeon to obtain a diagnosis. Reiki practitioners must not diagnose the health problem. For more on animal reiki click here

Distant reiki healing can be sent to both people and animals and is ideal when the client is too far away to travel to their Reiki practitioner, when it may be inappropriate or inconvenient to be with a Reiki Practitioner at the time that Reiki is sought and for animals in a number of situations.  As Reiki is a form of energy therapy, a Reiki Practitioner's work can travel any distance and has been shown to be just as effective whether given in person or from many miles away.

What to expect in a reiki session

‘Reiki is given in a quiet environment to people fully clothed, sitting down or lying on a treatment couch often with relaxing music.

When a reiki practitioner places her hands on or near a person or animal, the therapist will normally detect areas of higher energy sensitivity indicating that these are areas that could benefit from this ‘healing’ energy.

When reiki energy flows, the recipient will often feel warmth from the practitioner’s hands and a sense of calm relaxation typically follows although other feelings or benefits are possible.

In the case of animals, reiki is generally offered to them in their own familiar surroundings. They naturally tend to have a better understanding of this energy than humans and will typically choose how much to take and even move their body round so that the area they wish to be treated is closest to the practitioners hands.
